Centennial Park Amenities Approved

Enhancements to Sarnia's Centennial Park will move proceed as recommended.

At Monday's city council meeting, councillors voted 7-2 in favour of an amenities plan developed by city staff after three public meetings. Mayor Mike Bradley and councillor Andy Bruziewicz voted against the recommendations.

Councillor Bev MacDougall believes city staff completed what they were told to do. She says the city can only do so much within their budget.

It will take an estimated $2.64-million for the plan to be carried out with the help of a "Friends of Centennial Park" donation account.

Councillor Anne Marie Gillis says it's time to move on.

Gillis addressed Mayor Bradley's previous concerns about tent layouts over the staging area. She says she's seen it work in various other communities and withstand winter conditions.

The amenities plan includes trails and pathways, a playground structure, low-to-no maintenance gardens and landscape, as well as a community launch pad with washrooms, concessions, a staging area, and built in tent anchors to allow for a wide variety of tent layouts.

The entire park is expected to reopen in September 2016.
