Original Bridge Span To Reopen July 8

After being closed for over three months, the original Blue Water Bridge will reopen next week.

In a news release Wednesday, the Michigan Department of Transportation says the northernmost bridge will reopen as of 7am July 8.

MDOT and Blue Water Bridge Canada are wrapping up the resurfacing project that began with the closure of the bridge March 29.

The contractor faced some paving issues that have since been resolved.

MDOT invested $4.05-million and Canada $3-million in the resurfacing project that will preserve the safety and reliability of the bridge.

Traffic, in both directions, shifted to the newer eastbound span throughout the project.

About 14,600 vehicles cross the bridge daily.

While all lanes will be reopened July 8, officials say there will be intermittent, short-duration lane closures to allow crews to paint pavement markings on both spans.

The dedicated lanes for NEXUS, F.A.S.T., buses and wide loads will be open immediately for the westbound span and as soon as re-striping is completed on the eastbound span.
