City Turns Thumbs Down On Sifton Proposal

Sarnia City Council voted against the official plan amendment and rezoning applications for Sifton Properties at the northwest corner of Modeland Rd. and Michigan Ave. Monday.

City staff recommended the application be denied because it's not consistent with provincial policy and doesn't conform to the city and county official plans.

Sifton spokesperson Elton Theodore says a new application is likely not going to happen.

City councillor Bev MacDougall says she would like to see development happen, but this proposal does not meet the city's future needs.

Councillors voted 8-1 in support of the staff recommendation to turn down the rezoning application. Councillor Matt Mitro was the sole opposing vote.

It's likely council's decision will be appealed to the Ontario Municipal Board.
