Firefighters Battle Chemical Valley Grass Fires

Sarnia firefighters from five stations battled multiple grass fires in Chemical Valley in the late morning and over the noon hour Thursday. Platoon Chief Bill Sheane says spot fires spread along the train tracks from the south end of the city into the CN rail yard. He says crews from four stations extinguished five different fires from south of St. Andrew St. to south of Hwy. 40 while another station handled a fire in the rail yard.

Sheane says it was a lot of physical work getting manpower and equipment into multiple areas behind the businesses on Scott Rd. and around Imperial Oil. An investigation into the cause of the fires was involving discussions with rail road companies. Under Chemical Valley Emergency Coordinating Organization protocol, fire crews from Imperial and Lanxess also responded.
