Local Students At Eco-marathon In Detroit

Hundreds of students from Sarnia will be attending Shell's Eco-marathon that starts today (Thursday) in Detroit.

The event showcases the future of energy and some extremely energy efficient vehicles made by students.

Local company spokesperson Randy Provencal says Shell is providing bussing for over 200 students from Northern Collegiate and 50 from Lambton College.

More than 70 teams from Canada, the U.S., Brazil and Mexico have registered to take part.

Provencal says several employees at the Corunna refinery are volunteering at the event.

The North American Eco-challenge has been held in Houston since 2007, but is expected to stay in Detroit for the next several years.

The competition is open to the public and admission is free. Tickets are still available online by registering at www.shellecomarathon.us

The event at Cobo Hall wraps up Sunday.
