Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre Lease Renewed

The Sarnia Kiwanis Foundation's lease to operate the Lochiel Kiwanis Community Centre has been renewed.

Sarnia council giving its stamp of approval Monday.

This month mark's the 30th anniversary of the partnership between the city and Kiwanis Foundation to manage the centre. Foundation Finance Chair Ed Ginn told councillors the partnership has been beneficial to both organizations.

He says they've undertaken two major projects together.

The first was upgrading the heating system with cut the cost to heat the building annually in half.

He says the second saw the renovation of the second floor, which included the installation of fully accessible washrooms and a larger dance studio.

Ginn says these improvements have allowed them to accommodate the needs of tenants and kept the centres occupancy at 100 per cent.

The foundation also recently received a grant from the Enabling Accessibility Fund which will pay the cost to automate the lower level doors making them fully accessible. Ginn says that project will commence once warmer weather arrives.

Ginn told council with lease renewal they planned to apply for funding this year from the Ontario Trillium Foundation for a centennial project in 2016.

The new lease will expire March 31, 2016.
