Whalers Sink Sting In Final Seconds

Still smarting from a blown four goal lead on home ice Friday, the Sting lost a heartbreaker in Plymouth Saturday when the Whalers scored with five seconds left to win 3-2.

The teams were scoreless after the opening period and tied at 2 after two.

Defenseman Alex Black scored his first OHL goal to tie the game at one, four minutes into the second. Plymouth reclaimed the lead on the power play but rookie Troy Lajeunesse evened the score again with his tenth of the season from Anthony Salinitri and Jordan Kyrou.

With the game appeared headed to overtime, defenseman Sean Callaghan pounced on a loose puck off a defensive zone face-off and fired it past Sting netminder Justin Fazio at 19:55.

Sting associate coach Andy Delmore felt it was a good game.

The Sting had carried the play in the final period and outshot the Whalers in the game 36-31.

Fazio was solid in goal for the Sting despite the loss.

The Sting has now lost three games in a row and eight of its last ten to fall to the .500 mark at 25-25-4-3.

Sarnia still leads Saginaw and Windsor by eight points in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. Plymouth is now just five points back of the Spirit and Spitfires.

The Sting has 11 games remaining in the regular season including Sunday's tilt against the London Knights at the RBC Centre. Puck drop is at 4:05pm.
