Guelph Weathers Sting Storm

The Sarnia Sting won on the shot clock but not on the scoreboard in Guelph Friday night.

Sarnia outshot the Storm by an astonishing 61 to 26 margin only to lose 4-3 in a shootout.

Tyler Bertuzzi got the game winning goal in extra time snapping a quick wrist shot past Taylor Dupuis. Chris Marchese had scored previously to nullify Nikita Korostelev's goal that had given the Sting an early edge in the shootout.

The Sting dominated most of the game and took a 1-0 lead early in the second on Korostelev's 17th of the year.

Bertuzzi had tied the game at 1 with his 39th when Alex Renaud restored the Sting lead on a snap shot past a very busy Justin Nichols in the Storm net.

The Sting would carry the 2-1 lead into a wild third period.

Anthony Salinitri's one-timer gave the Sting a 3-1 advantage early in the final frame but Guelph stormed back with two goals in one minute to tie the score at 3.

Despite the Sting's 35-shot advantage, Dupuis made a series of game-saving stops late in the game including shutting down Bertuzzi on a penalty shot at 18:25.

Nichols, however, was clearly the first star with 58 saves. Bertuzzi was second star and Renaud was named third star for his goal and assist.

Sarnia was 0-7 on the power play.

The Sting (24-22-4-3) still recorded a valuable point for the shootout loss to pull into a tie with Owen Sound for sixth place in the Western Conference.

The Attack lost 4-3 in Erie.

The Sting returns home to host former Sting goaltender Brandon Hope and the Niagara IceDogs Saturday and welcomes back Anthony DeAngelo and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds for a Family Day matinee Monday at 2:05pm.
