Thousands Of Smart Meters Being Replaced

Ontario's Electrical Safety Authority is directing local utilities to replace a certain model of smart meter "as a preventative step'' and most of the units are in use in the Sarnia area.

The directive was made after a review of reports of meters catching fire in Saskatchewan.

No local utilities are using the model installed in Saskatchewan, but the safety authority in Ontario is ordering similar units to be removed.

Bluewater Power CEO Janice McMichael-Dennis confirms meters will be replaced across their service area within a couple of months.

There are about 5,400 of the meters in Ontario, 3,800 or more in the Sarnia area.

Mayor Mike Bradley says Bluewater Power is the most impacted utility in the province and the overall cost of replacement could be $1-million or more.
