Ice Breakers Work To Free Freighters

A number of freighters received assistance after getting stuck in the ice in the St. Clair River near Port Lambton over the weekend.

Superintendent of Regional Operations for the Canadian Coast Guard Andy Maillet says five freighters were stuck in the ice Sunday.

He says two were freed with help from the Canadian Ice Breaker Griffon and US Icebreaker Bristol Bay.

Maillet expected the Samuel Risley's arrival before noon Monday to assist the remaining three vessels.

He says  five vessels were waiting just north of Sarnia until conditions improved.

Ice build up on the St.Clair River forced the Walpole-Algonac Ferry and Bluewater Ferry between Sombra and Marine City, Michigan to suspend services.
