Sting Hits Break On High Note

The Sarnia Sting reached the Christmas break Friday night posting its 17th win, equalling its total for the entire 2013-2014 season.

Former Spirit Brandon Lindberg had two goals, an assist, was plus 4 and was named first star in the Sting's 4-1 win over Saginaw.

With several regulars still out due to national team commitments and injury, defenceman Jakob Chychrun and forward Hayden Hodgson returned to bolster the lineup.

Hodgson was also plus 4 with a goal and two assists and named the game's second star while Chychrun was outstanding on defence after a lengthy injury and scored a highlight reel goal to put the Sting up 3-0 after the first period.

Lindberg had opened the scoring with his 10th of the season and Hodgson followed with his 11th. Overage forward Stephen Pierog assisted on both goals and was also four to the good in plus-minus.

The line of Lindberg, Hodgson and Pierog combined for three goals and eight points.

Saginaw scored its lone goal in the second period but that was quickly answered by Lindberg with his second of the game and 11th of the season.

Sarnia outshot the Spirit 32-28. Taylor Dupuis had another solid performance in goal and was the third star. David Ovsjannikov took the loss in goal for the visitors.

The Sting (17-13-1-2) moves seven points ahead of third place Saginaw in the West Division and has lost just two games in regulation in its last ten.
