Mayor Wants Special Love Canal Meeting

Sarnia Mayor Mike Bradley has called for a special meeting of Lambton County Council to discuss concerns about the disposal of hazardous Love Canal waste at the Clean Harbors facility in St. Clair Twp.

The mayor says many people, both locally and nationally, have contacted his office about an estimated 80 truckloads of contaminated soil, originally from the infamous Love Canal NY site, being shipped here.

Mayor Bradley met with a group of concerned St. Clair Twp. residents directly impacted by the hazardous waste facility's acceptance of the shipments.

After the meeting he sent an email to city council colleague Bev MacDougall who was just elected Lambton County Warden this past week.

As a member of county council, Bradley is asking under the Rules of Order, that the warden call a special meeting as early as this coming week, to discuss the issue and receive public input.

Warden MacDougall has indicated the request will be considered Monday morning and she will get back to both the Sarnia mayor and his counterpart in St. Clair Twp., Steve Arnold.

The 1978 environmental disaster in the community of Love Canal is considered one of the worst in America’s history with toxic chemicals from a dump site making their way into homes and onto school yards in record rainfall.
