Depleted Sting Peters Out

The Sarnia Sting, playing its third game in three days, could not hold on against the visiting Peterborough Petes Saturday night at the RBC Centre.

Michael Clarke scored with just over two minutes to go to tie the game at 3 and the Petes went on to win 4-3 in a five round shootout.

Both teams were without several regulars due to injury, suspension and national team commitments.

As was the case in Friday's win in Kitchener the Sting jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Anthony DeAngelo and Nikita Korostelev but Peterborough battled back to tie the game at 2 early in the third period.

DeAngelo would give the Sting a 3-2 lead on a pretty set up by former Pete Stephen Pierog with about six minutes left but Clarke would get the equalizer at 17:53 to send the game to extra time.

After a scoreless overtime, each team would send five players to centre ice in the shootout with Anthony Stefano getting the winner after Jordan Kyrou had hit the post.

The loss snapped Taylor Dupuis' personal winning streak at 9 games. Sarnia outshot Peterborough 31-29. Dylan Wells recorded the win in goal for the visitors.

DeAngelo, the first star of the game, leads all OHL defencemen in scoring with 36 points in 28 games including 10 goals. The Sewell, New Jersey native will be leaving this week for the Team USA world junior selection camp.

Delmore says DeAngelo is a talented Player.

DeAngelo is tied with Korostelev for the team scoring lead. Korostelev also had an assist Saturday and now has 16 goals and 20 assists in 32 games.

The Sting (16-13-1-2) is in second place in the West Division, well behind Sault Ste. Marie but seven points up on Saginaw. The Spirit, with two games in hand, visits the RBC Centre Friday for what will be Sarnia's last game before the Christmas holiday break.
