Lawyers To Determine SGH Site Ownership

After an in-camera session Sarnia Council took five minutes at a special meeting this morning to authorize retaining legal help in the ownership dispute involving the old Sarnia General Hospital.

Bluewater Health's board has put the city on notice that no more money will be spent on maintenance and security at the Mitton St. site after this year because it believes the city owns the land and buildings.

Councillor Bev MacDougall says they recognize the urgency.

Council will hire Cohen Highley Lawyers to determine the ownership question and wants a meeting between senior staff of both organizations to try to resolve the issue without legal action.

Mayor Mike Bradley has said the city would have to seek an injunction if Bluewater Health abandons the site.

Some $1-million has been spent to maintain and secure the site since its closure in late 2011.
