City Set To Take Over RBC Centre

RBC Centre operations are to be assumed by the City of Sarnia July 1.

City council is being asked to ratify that Monday and to finalize negotiations with the Sarnia Sting Hockey Club on its continued occupancy as the major tenant.

Mayor Mike Bradley says it’s important to deal with both issues now so a new agreement with the Sting is in place before the club heads into its new season, and so staff has time to get the RBC Centre up to city standards by September.

Sarnia’s 2013 year-end operating deficit for the RBC Centre amounted to nearly $740,000.

Bradley says the city’s operating revenue in the takeover is crucial to minimizing the financial impact on Sarnia taxpayers.

A report provided to council last November, outlined approximately $1.6-million that would be collected by the city, including revenue splits on advertising and marketing, ticket fees, naming rights, suite rentals and the sale of food and beverages.
