A dedication ceremony was held this afternoon in Sarnia, to welcome the Harper Government’s first of nine new “Hero Class” vessels into service.
Nine Canadian Coast Guard employees along with 3 RCMP officers will be on board the vessel to enhance law enforcement on the Great Lakes.
The ship, Private Robertson V.C., will serve from the upper Niagara Region towards Lake St. Clair and Tobermory.
The RCMP will be obtaining three of the vessels for Ontario which will be divided up geographically.
South-West District Commander with the RCMP, Superintendent Jamie Jagoe says it will play a key role in deterring cross border smuggling and human trafficking.
The ship was name in honour of Victoria Cross recipient James Peter Robertson.
Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Keith Ashfield along with Sarnia-Lambton MPP Pat Davidson were among dignitaries who spoke at the ceremony.
