Canada opened the 2018 WBSC Jr. Men's Softball Championships in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan with a big 10-3 win over the United States in 6 innings.
Williamsford's Owen Torrie pitched 5 and a third, and allowed 3 runs on 3 hits with 12 strike outs and 7 walks. Torrie says he wasn't sure he'd start but the win was huge.
"It was pretty unexpected, I wasn't sure if I'd get the start or not, but I got it and coming in the crowd was crazy and the U.S. is obviously a big game in our pool, and it was good to get the win."
Torrie says after a tough 2nd inning where he allowed the 3 runs, the coach allowed him to settle down and go back to work.
"He let me back in the third, and if I had given up a couple hits or even a run I likely would have been out, but I was able to shut the door after that."
Canada resumes round robin play tonight at 8 p.m. CST (10 p.m. EST) when they take on the Czech Republic.
