Cyclones Drop OT Decision To London, Series Goes To 6

The Listowel Cyclones went into London Wednesday night with a chance to move on to the Sutherland Cup Final, but ran into a desperate London squad that squeezed out a 2-1 win in overtime.

Listowel opened the first with a number of dominating shifts, and it started to look a little like the previous high scoring game 4.   But David Ovsjannikov had a big turnaround game in net for the Nationals, and kept the Cyclones off the board.   London managed to take the lead as captain Brenden Trottier sniped from the high slot in tight to beat Max Wright, with Max Vinogradov and Brandon Glover getting the helpers on the lone goal of the period.

The second period had long stretches of open play, but didn’t result in much for either team. Listowel and London were stretching the ice a bit too much with the long change, trying to hit home run passes through the neutral zone that didn’t connect.  It ended without much excitement, and the lone penalty of the game was called when captain Blake Nichol put Listowel short handed for goalie interference.

In the third, Listowel got back to generating rush plays from their own end, and getting great support down low, which ended up creating the goal that tied it. Caleb Warren chased down a Nichol dump in, and slid it onto the doorstep from below the goal line to the waiting stick of Mitch Deelstra, who made no mistake to tie it.

The game would then move into overtime, and London scored off a bounce off the stick of Blake Nichol, who fanned on an outlet pass, and Cohen Kiteley went in alone and roofed it past a helpless Wright, who was sensational in the game, making over 30 saves.

So the Nationals push the series to 6, and that game will go Friday night in Listowel at 7:30. CKNX will bring you full coverage of the tilt.
