Cyclones In Cherrey Cup, Elmira Closer

Listowel Cyclones forward Cullen Mercer scored four times in the second period as Listowel beat Waterloo 6-2 to sweep the Waterloo Siskins in the GOJHL semi-finals.

The Siskins struck first and held a 2-1 lead after the first period.

But Mercer says they knew they had more gas in the tank.

"We knew it wasn't our best period," says Mercer. "But we also knew we had a lot more to give so in the first period we were saying keep our heads up and opportunities will come."

And come they did.

After Brady Anderson scored on the power play at the 4:47 mark of the second period, Mercer took over. The late season addition scored four goals in an eight minute span, with three of those goals on the power play.

Mercer ended the series with 11 points as did line mate Jamie Huber and they have connected in the playoffs since coming from the Flint Firebirds and Prince George Spruce Kings respectively.

"I couldn't be having more fun than I am here," says Mercer. "And with a guy like Huber, I played for years with so I came back and there's that instant chemistry that we built up over the years. So it's a good opportunity to play with a good buddy like that again."

Listowel will now rest and wait to see who their opponent will be in the Cherrey Cup Final.

Elmira doubled up Kitchener 4-2 last night to take a 3-2 series lead.

Sugar King Goalie Jonathan Reinhart was the difference in that game stopping 41 of 43 shots.

Game 6 of that series is in Kitchener Friday night.
