Cyclones Survive Scrappy Siskin Play

Listowel overcame some late game adversity in a 3-2 overtime over Waterloo to take a 3-0 lead in the GOJHL Midwest semi-final.

Waterloo made some big changes to their line-up after being outscored 13-1 in the first two games. The Siskins called up four AP players from the Waterloo Wolves midget program and used them throughout the game.

Listowel took the lead in the first when Ben VanOoteghem chipped the puck over the offensive blue line to Cullen Mercer who found an open Jamie Huber on the right wing. Huber buried it for the opening goal of the game at 7:04 of the first. The Cyclones had a number of other chances but Waterloo goalie Liam Devine kept it close.

In the second period, Holdyn Lansink scored from the slot to make it 2-0.

For the rest of the second and all of the third, Listowel was unable to beat Devine as the Waterloo kept the Siskins within striking distance.

Waterloo was able to get on the board early in the third when forward Scott Cherry threw what looked like a harmless shot towards the net from the top of the face-off circle. It slipped over the shoulder of Brock Baier to make it 2-1. Cherry scored his second of the game with just 1:11 left in the third on a scramble in front of the Listowel net, on the power play, to tie the game.

In the overtime period, Cyclones' forward Blake Nichol took a four minute penalty for high sticking early on. Waterloo was able to generate chances but Listowel held. The Cyclones were the called for too many men at 7:13 of overtime and again didn't break.

Listowel forward Jamie Huber finally put an end to it, streaking down the right wing he snapped a low hard shot past Devine.

Huber ended up with three points on the night, with two goals and assist including the winner. Mercer had three assists and VanOotenghem and Alec Tiley also picked up a point each.

Devine stopped 38 shots in the Waterloo net while Baier stopped 36 shots.

Game 4 is Wednesday night in Waterloo at 7:30pm.
