Saugeen Shores Triumphs In Overtime To Eliminate Durham

The Saugeen Shores Winterhawks needed overtime to eliminate the Durham Thundercats from the WOAA Sr. "AA" Hockey League playoffs.

Jeff MacDermid scored four minutes into the extra frame to cap off a wild 6-5 win in Game 5 of their quarterfinal series, giving Saugeen Shores a 4-1 series win.

The game saw Durham jump out to a 2-0 lead after one period of play and Saugeen Shores Head Coach Jim Grieve says his team bounced back after a spirited intermission speech.

"We went in [after] the first period and had a few choice words for each other and then we got back on track," said Grieve. "It was just one of those games when the puck seems to bounce into the net, no matter what your best intentions are."

MacDermid appeared to put the series away late in the 3rd period when he scored on a penalty shot to give Saugeen Shores a 5-4 lead, but Durham tied the game up just a minute later on the powerplay.

The fireworks continued after the game when Durham netminder Gatlin Burt and Saugeen Shores defenceman Theo Peckham jostled in the handshake line.

Burt was then allegedly involved in a physical altercation with a fan after leaving the ice surface. Saugeen Shores Police say they are investigating the incident.

Saugeen Shores and the Petrolia Squires have advanced to the semi-finals after Petrolia knocked out the Ripley Wolves in five games with a 6-4 win on Friday night.

The two teams won't face each other, however, and will await the winners of the series' between Clinton and Tavistock, as well as Mapleton-Minto and Tillsonburg.
