Hellyer Looks to Bring Champions Cup Back to Bruce County

Lion's Head native Rob Hellyer is hoping to bring the NLL Champions Cup back to the Bruce Peninsula.

"Back in 2011 I got to take the trophy in the Canada Day Parade and It would be cool to do that again."

A number of local players will be in the Toronto Rock lineup when the NLL Championship series gets going Saturday in a best of three series.

To get there Toronto beat Rochester 11-8 and 8-2 last week to take the Eastern Conference Final. Hellyer says that win has the team feeling confident ahead of a battle with Edmonton.

"To knock off the 3 time defending champs was pretty big for us." He said. "Edmonton is a great team so I expect another competitive series."

With a career high 90 points in only 14 regular season games, Hellyer's chance at the scoring title and possible NLL record hit a setback. Since returning he has added 13 points in 3 playoff games.

This has turned the Bruce County boy into a bit of a home town hero. Hellyer says he is honored by all the recognition.

"Coming from a small town it is a cool experience to know everybody is following you but at the end of the day I am just another person from Lion's Head"

Three other local players will be in the Rock lineup for the finals. Elora's Kasey Beirnes, Rob Marshall from Arthur and Colin Doyle who lives in Wiarton are all expected to dress. Toronto hosts Edmonton in game 1 of the series Saturday night at 7:00 p.m.
