It wasn't the best ending to the season for the University of Waterloo Women's Hockey Team. The Warriors finished with an 11-9-4 record and 26 points, just one back of Ryerson and Nipissing for the final playoff spots. Their last game of the season was a 7-1 loss to rivals Laurier, a win would have meant a playoff berth.
However there was a bright spot that gives a lot of hope for the coming years. Clinton native Stephanie Sluys has finished her first year of university hockey and will be looking to build off a solid rookie campaign. She went 9-5 with 7 shutouts (best in OUA) in 14 starts. Her goals against average of 1.68 ranks her third in the province.
Sluys, a first year Kinesiology student, has had a few notable highlight performances. She had a 52 saves in back to back shutout nights, beating Guelph 1-0 and Brock 3-0. She was named female athlete of the week for he efforts.
While she has made a name for herself this season in Waterloo, Sluys isn't the only local with a key role on the team. Kincardine native Kaitlyn McDonell is the team's captain. The 4th year forward had 5 goals and 6 assists for 11 points.
