An OPP officer prevented a possible tragedy by jumping onto a moving transport truck as it approached Clinton and a school zone.
Shortly before 8 a.m. police got two calls about a commercial truck travelling erratically on Highway 8 east of Clinton. Witnesses told police the westbound vehicle was travelling at slow speeds.
Despite being followed by numerous police vehicles with lights flashing and sirens blaring, the truck did not stop. Police used a spike belt to deflate the tires but the truck continued towards the town, getting nearer to the school zone just as children would be making their way to class.
Police said a senior officer with the Huron OPP Crime Unit, with no hesitation, jumped onto the side of the truck and was able to get into the cab. With the help of another officer, they stopped the truck and got the driver out.
Police suspect the driver suffered a medical event but are still investigating.
Highway 8 is now open in the area.
