Bruce Grey MP Appalled At Removal Of Founding Father Statue

Bruce Grey Owen Sound MP Larry Miller says by removing a statue of the founder of confederation, the City of Victoria is trying to cover up history.

Miller is shocked and appalled after the city put the statue of Founding Father Sir John A. Macdonald in storage.

He thinks the city has decided that it is not worth commemorating confederation and our first prime minister.

He disagrees with the recent movement to only look at mistakes and the worst qualities of historical figures while eliminating their accomplishments.

He says leaders may not have been perfect by today's standards, but says Canadians need to understand our history, learn from our mistakes, and celebrate the events, groups and leaders that led us to where we are today.

Miller says Macdonald did make mistakes and did play a part in the residential school system. But Miller says Macdonald was also the first Canadian to attempt to give Aboriginal Canadians the right to vote.

However, his work to allow women and aboriginal Canadians to vote was reversed by Sir Wilfrid Laurier. And he says the founder of Universal healthcare, Tommy Douglas, wanted to segregate those he called subnormal.

He says if we doom all of these great visionaries to the dark pages of history we will have very little to be proud of and celebrate.

Miller insists we must learn from the mistakes, celebrate the successes, and look forward to the future that, because of these leaders, we can choose to create.
