Goderich Hockey Fundraising Total Climbs

The Hometown Heroes: Raise A Little Health Charity Hockey Game in Goderich has now raised well over $200,000 for local groups.

This year's version raised $55,000, which will be split between Alexandra Marine and General Hospital, Gateway Centre of Excellence in Rural Health, and the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign.

Huron-Bruce MP Ben Lobb says despite some of the geo-political things going on, health care is still at the top of people's minds.

"One of the top issues consistently in people's minds and in their hearts," says Lobb. "And when you see polling numbers come out, health care is always near the top."

"This game is kind of symbolic of our entire system," adds Lobb. "We want to live a health productive life so we don't need our health care system, but if we need our health care system it is there."

St. Louis Blues' centre Ryan O'Reilly led the roster of players.

"You know, to come back here and see faces you do miss and to support this event that reaches so many programs, it's such a great community that does well with what's raised here," says O'Reilly.

San Jose Sharks coach Peter DeBoer helped coach O'Reilly's Team Blue.

Some other local players included goalie Greg Dodds from Wingham, Blyth's Alex Peters, and Teeswater's Aaron Armstrong.

Other notable local names from the Goderich area included NCAA and Canadian University women's players; Goderich's goalie Julia Gaynor (Davenport), Kate Smith, Hensall's Abbey Caldwell (Laurentian), Bayfield's Sierra Burt (Lindenwood University), and Goderich's Courtney Gardiner (York University).

Just to note, O'Reilly's Team Blue edged out Team White.
