Saugeen Shores Elementary Students Challenged To Ride

Saugeen Shores elementary students can become Bike To School Champion this week. Ontario Bike Month is underway, and the town has initiated a friendly challenge between the two local elementary schools.

The challenge started Monday and will last until Friday. And the school with the most students riding their bikes each day will win pool parties, and a class pizza party. Trees for Saugeen will also plant a tree in the winning schoolyard to mark the victory.

Students are being reminded that a helmet can reduce the risk of a serious head injury. Riders should ensure their equipment is safe, and know the rules of the road.

The winner will be announced on June 18.

“Biking is visibly a large part of recreation in Saugeen Shores, and we hope that the Bike to School Challenge increases travelling by bike community-wide,” said Chief Mike Bellai from Saugeen Shores Police Services. “Along with encouraging biking, we want to remind cyclists and motorists to be as safe as possible when on the roads. For cyclists, this includes proper signalling, bike maintenance and being aware of your surroundings. For motorists, this includes sharing the road, providing a minimum of 1 metre when passing and respecting speed limits.”

“We encourage parents to practice a safe route to school with their kids,” says Lisa Billing, Recreation Supervisor with the Town. “A trial run will help foster confidence for both parents and their children before they head off to school on their bikes in the coming week,” Billing said.

June is filled with bike-related events for all ages to enjoy. Visit saugeenshores.ca/cycling for a calendar of activities.
