New Apartment Building Proposal For Goderich

A proposal for a two-storey apartment building on the site of the former Victoria Public School in Goderich is on its way to Huron County council for approval.

The proposal was presented to Goderich council earlier this week.

Mayor Kevin Morrison says some of the units will be affordable housing, which is different than low-income housing.

"We've got 29 new units, twelve of which will be affordable housing units, the rest will be at market," says Morrison. "But people, perhaps, didn't understand affordable housing is different from low-income housing. These units are at 80% of the market value and the units that aren't within that program will be at market value, so it's a good mix."

There will also be some accessible units.

The mayor adds, "The location to the core area is ideal and it also leaves the centre of the property still available and the county is perhaps interested in looking at that for administrative offices there."

Construction could start within a few weeks and would take six to seven months to complete.
