Affordable Housing Plans In Goderich

The CAO of Goderich says the town has received two offers from developers to buy property on the former Victoria Public School to develop affordable housing units.

Council had previously asked staff to follow up with one of the developers and its now in the hands of the county.

“Council directed one of the offers to purchase for staff to follow up with the perspective proponent on affordable housing and that was done on about 1.7 or 1.8 acres of land at the Victoria Public School property,” says CAO Larry McCabe. “So it's a process now that's within the county and we'll be awaiting any decision on that offer or another offer that has been submitted within the town and that will go on to the province for certain approvals at that level.”

Huron County has already said it will support the development of ten or possibly 12 affordable housing units, but is also discussing the possibility of a total of 20 units.

McCabe says with all of the approvals necessary it will be a while before shovels are in the ground.

The affordable housing units would be behind the new hotel that is currently under construction.
