Bayfield Arena Ice Still A Hot Potato

The move to pull ice out of the Bayfield Arena isn’t going away.

A group that is setting the terms of reference for a recreational study met late this week and was still talking about that decision made by the council.

Chair of the committee Leanne Kavanagh says it is a unique situation.

“I do feel that we are in a bit of a unique situation because we're dealing with a study after a motion has been made to remove a service of recreation in our community and now we're doing a study after the fact.”

Mayor Tyler Hessel stated if the consultant's report recommends that ice be kept in the arena council could rescind the original motion.

“Council can change any of their motions simply by rescinding them, pretty much at any point,” said Hessel. But with a municipal election set for October, it could complicate matters. “Lame duck would be interesting, I think I'd have to talk with the clerk on that one. I think there's still an opportunity to look at everything. Generally it's about major financial decisions.”

In the end the committee set its terms of reference for the consultant.

“Going from here we are finalizing our draft terms of reference,” said Kavanagh. “We're hoping to have a completion of that in the next week and then it will go in front of council for approval. All the community comment letters we received that we reviewed tonight will go along as a package with the terms of reference draft and then hopefully we'll get approval of that.”

Some committee members still feel that council should at least rescind the motion to take ice out of the Bayfield arena by next season until the consultant's report is done.
