Grey County Getting Investment Ready

Grey County's Economic Development Team says this year's top priority is ensuring they are investment ready.

Manager Savanna Myers brought an update of their activities to West Grey Council this week.

She says they also want to promote Grey County's economic assets and opportunities.

Myers says there are some barriers to address including a lack of skilled labour, affordable housing, adequate transportation networks and childcare services.

Grey County's top employment sectors include healthcare, manufacturing, construction, retail, accommodation, and food services.

Myers wants to establish The Regional Skills Training and Innovation Centre, most likely at the current temporary home of the facility at the former Sydenham School in Owen Sound. The new centre provides training in advanced electrical, welding, pipe fitting, millwright, automotive repair, and advanced nursing, among others. The Team will also look into satellite locations, virtual learning or mobile labs for the Skills Training, Trade and Innovation Centre and Launch Pad.

The team also plans to hold a regional Job Fair over the next year.

She says they hope to be able to retain existing businesses, jobs, and newcomers to the county.

They are also working on a business directory and creating GIS mapping for available commercial and industrial lands.

West Grey Council asked the team about attracting Bruce Power suppliers and were told the team is working on that.
