New Life For Grey Gables in Markdale

Grey Gables in Markdale has a life.

Grey County Council will revisit the decision made earlier this year to put the county-run long-term care facility up for sale to the private sector.

Under that scenario Grey Gables would have been amalgamated with a new facility in Durham. But a plan put forward by Markdale resident Darrin Patey would keep Grey Gables open and save the county more money in the long run. Patey says the first plan was not popular in the community.

"I think the community backlash is quite large on this. I haven't met anybody yet whose happy with it," says Patey.

Grey Highlands Mayor Paul McQueen has been fighting to save Grey Gables. He says it's important for the county to take another look at the earlier decision.

"It's all positive because I think it's important that we take a look at this in the long term because it is all about our community, it is all about Grey County," says McQueen.

Grey County councillors were also influenced by the recent promise by the provincial Liberal government to increase the number of long-term care beds in the province. The county's Long Term Care Committee of Management will revisit the issue to see how the provincial promise plays out and determine what's best for the people of Grey County.
