Port Elgin Beach House Proposal Scaled Down

The "Beach House" proposal for the Port Elgin waterfront will go out for tenders for a second time.

Saugeen Shores council voted to move ahead with tendering a scaled-down version of the washroom renovation proposed for the foot of Green St., after rejecting tenders in June when quotes came in at $1.1-million.

Director of Community Services Jayne Jagelewski says the new proposal includes a renovation of the existing washroom facility, as well as a new sidewalk to improve accessibility to the beach, and a municipal storage garage, with an estimated price tag of about $500,000.

She says the plans also call for four family pods to be constructed, which give families privacy to change in and out of their beachwear.

"It's a unit that accommodates an entire family to use and it's also accessible for wheelchair accessibility, so we're looking at four additions of those to the existing washroom." says Jagelewski. "We're looking at a total renovation of the existing washroom."

Jagelewski says they will now work on preparing the updated tender package, which she hopes to have out to contractors within a month, though she cautions it's too early to say when construction could begin.
