More Info Requested About Nuclear Waste Disposal Site Near Lake Huron

The minister of the environment is again calling for more information about Ontario Power Generation's plan to stash nuclear waste deep underground near Lake Huron.

Environment Minister Catherine McKenna is asking how a proposed bunker for low and medium level nuclear waste at Bruce Power might affect area First Nations peoples.

OPG says its has been asked to update the analysis of potential cumulative effects of the permanent nuclear waste storage site on the physical and cultural heritage of the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.

OPG committed in 2013 to ensure the project would not proceed without the support of the area first nation.

Last month, the Saugeen Ojibway Nation wrote McKenna to say the project must have its support. The nation called for an assurance that its views would be taken into account.

It is not clear how her new information request might affect the decision timeline.

The Deep Geologic Repository [DGR] will be a first of its kind in Canada.

Joint Review Panel Participant John Mann says the project should be scrapped as the decision has taken far longer than legally allowed.
