SIU Clears Perth County Officers After Man Injured During Arrest

The Special Investigations Unit has found no wrongdoing on the part of Perth County OPP after a man was injured during an arrest.

The SIU announced no criminal charges will be laid against any Perth County OPP officer in connection with the incident in 2016.

Two Perth County OPP officers had stopped a truck on February 15 after responding to a call that the occupants of a grey truck were shooting into fields County Rd. 111 and Line 26. Police officers were also told that a gun was pointed at a citizen and threats were made.

The complainant was arrested for pointing a firearm and then released after a witness changed his story.

Officers say they guided a man to lie on the ground as they took him into custody. One officer put his knee on the suspect's back to hold him still as they cuffed him. A cracking was heard from the man's back.

However, after interviewing witnesses, police determined no criminal offense had been committed.

On February 16, 2016, the complainant was diagnosed with a fractured rib and police were informed.

The SIU was informed several weeks later.
