Huron County's director of cultural services is concerned about some accessibility issues at the Clinton Library.
Meighan Wark says 11 of the 12 libraries received their accreditation following an audit in 2015. The exception was the Clinton library and the issues were generally around accessibility.
Wark explains when the Clinton library was constructed, accessibility was not an issue so the height of shelves or width of aisles were not a consideration. But they are now.
Wark says it is up to Central Huron council to decide if they want to seek accreditation. Council would have to choose whether or not to work within the envelope of the existing building to comply with the accessibility requirements.
The second flood of the Clinton library where the children's area is is not fully accessible so that for example would be seen as unacceptable from the perspective of the auditors," Wark explains. "I think if they're looking to achieve accreditation a decision has to be made from council if they're willing to work within the existing envelope or whether they are interested in another possibility.”
