Huron Health Unit Promoting 'First Week Challenge'

The Huron County Health Unit is encouraging smokers to try the Canadian Cancer Society’s First Week Challenge Contest.

Public Health Promotion Student Brayden Lisiecki explains the Challenge gives smokers who can go smoke-free for the first week of a month a chance to win 500 dollars.

The Cancer Society's research indicates that a smoker who can quit for seven days has a nine times greater chance of remaining smoke-free, and every quit attempt gets a smoker a little closer to finally quitting.

Lisiecki adds September is one of the months when many smokers try to quit, and if they give up later in the month they can try again in October or any other month. "The First Week Challenge Contest basically gets people to quit or remain tobacco-free for the first seven days of each month and it's just kind of that extra nudge that the chance of winning 500 dollars to make that quit attempt", explains Lisiecki.

Smokers can get more information on the rules and how to apply from the First Week Challenge web site or they can call the Huron County Health Unit.
