Costal Conservation Workshops

The Lake Huron Centre for Coastal Conservation is hosting three workshops this month for the three counties along the Lake Huron shoreline.

Coastal Stewardship Coordinator Hannah Cann explains the workshops will be held in Port Elgin, Point Clark and Grand Bend.

They're free and open to everyone and the discussions will be around their coastal action plan as well as hot topics like lake water levels and invasive species and what residents along the shoreline value.

Cann adds the August workshops will be similar to those held in February but this will give seasonal residents the opportunity to get in on the discussion. Cann said the invasive species that people are talking about right now is phragmites.

“We will be discussing our coastal action plan, some questions that have been hot topics this year, including the high lake levels and invasive species and we'll also have a great opportunity to network and talk a bit more with these communities about what they value,” said Cann.

Phragmites is a very tall weed that grows in shallow water along the shoreline and in waterways beside roads.

The weed has been a serious problem in Lambton County for some time and is now making its way into Huron and Bruce counties.

“A lot of people are familiar with and concerned about Phragmites, which is that tall reed that you see along the lake shore in shallow water and even along roadways and highways so a lot of awesome activists groups are trying to tackle Phragmites, especially in the Port Franks area,” said Cann.

More information, including dates and locations of the workshops can be found on the Coastal Conservation web site.
