Fake $50 Bills Circulating In Midwestern Ontario

Police are investigating after a number of counterfeit $50 bills were reported in the Midwestern Ontario region.

According to police in Saugeen Shores, one of the bills was used at a local business on July 10 at around 9:30pm, to purchase food.  The fake bill was turned into police on Monday and after checking the serial number, it was determined that similar counterfeit $50 bills has been used six times since May 3.

In Goderich, a similar bill was used on July 12 at a Bank of Montreal branch, and on July 15, another bill was used in Owen Sound at a Rexall.  Four other fake bills with matching serial numbers were used in Orillia, Barrie and New Tecumseth.

Police say the person who paid with the bill in Saugeen Shores is described as a male in his late teens to early 20s, tall, thin, with dark hair and possibly of an East Indian descent. He was last seen wearing a black t-shirt and Adidas style sport pants. Police have also released photos of surveillance footage of the male, which can be seen below.

Police say this person may or may not know he has passed a counterfeit bill and officers would like to talk to him. Anyone with information is asked to call police at 519-832-9200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
