North Huron Waste Management Plan On Hold

Members of North Huron Council have once again found themselves embroiled within the issue of curbside garbage collection.

On Monday, council split on a recorded vote to adopt a three-year contract with Waste Management, meaning a final decision will have to wait until all members of council are present.

Wingham enjoys weekly curbside garbage pickup, something beneficial to renters and those without the ability to store a lot of garbage for an extended period of time, but with citizens demanding a lower tax rate, a move to bi-weekly collection would surely allow for a relaxed tax number for the majority of North Huron rate-payers.

Councillor Trevor Seip has zoned in on garbage collection as a great way for council to save money for its taxpayers, and says with local landfills open three days per week, bi-weekly would simply mean asking those within apartments to make the trip over to these landfills to drop off any additional garbage they have trouble storing.

Council will wait for the return of Councillor Brock Vodden at the next council meeting to ultimately decide the vote on continuing with weekly curbside garbage pickup.

North Huron asked citizens in surveys earlier in 2017 what they thought of garbage collection.

While the first survey found an overwhelming majority favored weekly pickup, that number came down a fair bit when information was provided regarding the amount of taxes it would cost those within North Huron to continue with weekly pickup.

Especially when weighed against the savings that could be incurred with a switch to bi-weekly curbside pickup.
