Chesley Community Marks Final Days Of High School

A public assembly to mark the closure of Chesley District Community School as a high school has taken an unexpected turn.

Students present walked out in protest when Bluewater Board of Education Director Alana Murray rose to speak.

Starting in September, the high school students will go to other schools in the Bluewater board.

Murray says she respects the students' right to express their opinion.

Meanwhile, it was an emotional time to see the closure of the 119-year-old high school for staff, students, former teachers and alumni.

"It's the saddest day of my life," says Robin Woodyard, a former teacher. "Because there was so much spirit in this school, so much comradery. No kid fell through the cracks at the school because we knew them individually."

Student Council Co-President Gabrielle Hatten says at least the students were all together for one last time.

"I think it's a sad day because of the reason we're together, but the fact that we're all here together makes it a good day. We just feel like we're all family together today," says Hatten.

The assembly watched a video of the history of Chesley District High School highlighting its academic, artistic and sports excellence.

Now known as Chesley District Community School, it will still be the home for JK to Grade 8 students through the school year.

Bayview Public School and Sydenham Coummnity schools in Owen Sound also had closing ceremonies Thursday evening. And the closing ceremony for Dufferin Elementary School, also in Owen Sound, took place Wednesday night.
