Owen Sound Celebrates Police Week

Owen Sound Police have a full plate of activities planned in observance of Police Week.

Tours of the police station and the appointment of a "Chief for a Day" will be among the events scheduled during the week by the police service.  The purpose of Police Week is to spotlight the cooperation the police service has with the community.

Guided tours of the Owen Sound Police Station are being offered on Monday and Saturday nights, providing visitors a rare opportunity to see how policing takes place behind the scenes.  The tours will run from 7:30 to 9pm both evenings.

Five officers will be paired up with students for the "Shop with a Cop" event Monday at the Owen Sound Zehrs.  The pairs will try to gather as close to $100 in groceries as possible without going over.  The amount of groceries gathered by the five teams will be donated to the Salvation Army.

On Tuesday, Owen Sound Police Chief William Sornberger will preside over the graduation ceremony for the 2016-17 KIDS program at the Roxy Theatre.  It will be the first time a mass ceremony will be held for the grade six students completing the program.

The "Chief for a Day" will be sworn in during a public ceremony at the police station Wednesday at 10am.  The recipient is a grade five student who will receive a fitted uniform and read the essay they wrote as an entry for the competition.

Sornberger and members of the police services board will recognize local emergency personnel on Thursday.

Friday will mark an event during which police will spend time with Syrian refugees who have settled in the Owen Sound area.  Officers will discuss the role of police in Canada and provide tips on how the Canadian justice system works and how to call police in the event of a problem.
