OPG Will Apply Lessons From Hanford Nuclear Incident To Proposed DGR

Ontario Power Generation is closely watching the developments at the Hanford nuclear waste site in Washington State.

OPG will look to incorporate any learning from the Hanford incident into their project to store low and medium level nuclear waste in a deep geologic repository at the Bruce Power site in Kincardine.

Part of the ground above the highly radioactive waste storage area in Hanford collapsed, with caving in the roof of a concrete tunnel where radioactive equipment is stored.

Officials say there is no indications that the collapse released radioactivity into the air.

Ontario Power Generation Communications Manager Fred Kuntz says OPG's proposed Deep Geologic Repository is 680 metres underground in rock, while the Hanford tunnel is just 3 metres below ground.
