MPP Calls On Province To Keep Long-Term Care Beds In Perth County

Perth Wellington MPP Randy Pettapiece is urging Minister of Longer Term Care Eric Hoskins to reject any proposal to transfer beds out of the riding.

Pettapiece says many people have contacted his office after learning a long-term care home near Sebringville will close its doors. He says the employees, residents and their families  from Hillside Manor are extremely upset, and want clarification about the decision.

Pettapiece has asked the minister about a report that states 38 of Hillside's 90 beds would be transferred to London, and the remainder to other homes.

He wants to know how that idea will be evaluated and who will conduct public consultations. He says communication has been extremely lacking.

Pettapiece adds Perth Wellington has already lost long term care beds in Stratford and Harriston, while other homes face uncertain futures.

He says without provincial investment to make required upgrades, there's a risk of even more closures, and bed losses, despite a higher than average number of seniors in the region. Pettapiece expects the number of people waiting for long term care beds will jump to 48,000 within the next six years.
