Public Can Comment On ACW Council Restructuring Plan

The Township of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh is looking at re-structuring its council.

Reeve Ben Van Deipenbeek explains they wanted to make council more efficient by reducing council from seven members to five.

He says there seemed to be a lot of support for having the reeve and deputy reeve run at-large.

However, he says keeping two members for each ward would then give them eight councillors.

Their goal was to reduce the number of councillors not increase them from the current seven.

So they're proposing the reeve and deputy reeve run at-large and then have one councillor from each ward for a total of five councillors.

Van Deipenbeek adds the Municipal Act was changed a few years ago to remove the need to advertise changes of this nature but council felt it was important enough to advertise anyway.

Residents have a chance to comment on the proposed change over the next two weeks.
