Bruce Power Offers Continued Support For Nuclear Waste Storage DGR In Kincardine

Bruce Power is reiterating its support for the planned Deep Geologic Repository to bury nuclear waste at the site in Kincardine.

Spokesperson James Scongack says Ontario Power Generation's plan to put the waste deep underground beside Lake Huron was ruled a safe process by the Joint Review Panel.

OPG will submit further information on the plan to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency May 26 in hopes of gaining approval for the project.

Scongack says OPG has already been storing the waste safely on the surface for over 40 years. He says the waste management process is fully funded as the waste is generated.

Scongack also points out the the waste generated by nuclear plants is actually less radioactive that the waste generated by coal plants. Fly ash from a coal plant carries 100 times more radiation into the environment than a nuclear plant.

He explains an individual who received 100% of their lifetime energy needs from nuclear would create enough waste to fit into a pop can.
