Midwestern Ontario Employers Still Struggle To Find Skilled Workers

Employers in Bruce Grey Huron and Perth Counties say they are still struggling to find qualified workers.

The third annual Employer One Survey found most employers see a need for soft skills training.

Several community training initiatives are underway to address soft skills in an effort to create and sustain a stronger local workforce.

Soft skills include things like adaptability, problem solving, teamwork and communication.

In 2016, 461 employers hired at least one employee. There were 5,416 new positions opened in the region last year, with over half of them being full time.

However, half of employers reported they had trouble filling at least one position last year.

“We need to focus on developing a community strategy that addresses employer concerns and have businesses involved in the discussions” said Gemma Mendez-Smith, executive director of the Four County Labour Market Planning Board.
