Bear Spray Forces Hanover Apartment Evacuation

Hanover police were forced to evacuate an apartment building on 12th Street due to a strong chemical odour.

Police were responding to a report of a disturbance in the 500-block at around 4:40am Tuesday, when they developed respiratory distress due to a chemical in the air.

Hanover firefighters helped evacuate the building and transport the residents to the Salvation Army facility.

Moments later, police received a disturbance call involving a man acting bizarre, knocking on doors and windows of local homes.

Officers apprehended a male suspect who appeared to be under the influence of drugs. He was taken to hospital for treatment.

The OPP eventually determined the odour in the apartment building was caused by bear spray.

Residents were allowed to return home around 6pm after the building was property ventilated.

Hanover police have charged Kevin Petrino, age 30, of Hanover, with assault and breach of probation.

Anyone with information regarding either of these incidents is asked to call police at 519-364-2411 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS.
