St. Marys Hospital Declares Gastrointestinal Illness Outbreak Over

An outbreak of a gastrointestinal illness at St. Marys Memorial Hospital is now over.

The Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance declared the outbreak at the inpatient unit January 17.

CEO Andrew Williams says the impact of an outbreak on patients, their families and the health care team is significant.

He adds declaring an end to the outbreak is a testament to the team's dedication to ensuring a safe environment.

He says they have identified the highly contagious Norovirus as the cause behind the outbreak.

Norovirus is commonly referred to as the stomach flu and causes an infection in the stomach and intestines. This infection is not caused by the influenza virus.
