The Saugeen Shores Police Service is seeing a significant increase in the number of people using crystal meth.
Chief Dan Rivett says as recently as five years ago, meth use was so rare, his officers would only seize it once or twice a year, but now they are seeing it on a regular basis.
He says the reason for the spike in popularity is simple -- it's inexpensive and easy to find; but adds once a person tries meth, they are hooked and quitting is extremely difficult.
Saugeen Shores has seen a recent rash of break-ins and vehicle entries and while Rivett says they don't know if it is tied to drug activity, that tends to be the case.
"Quite often, it's simply people out there trying to support their habit," says Rivett. "So they're out there stealing money, change and anything they can sell out of cars."
Rivett says the best way to fight crystal meth use is increased public education and more police resources.
